Whitelist and Blacklist Email Addresses

Difficulty Level: Medium

Whitelisting and Blacklisting are both very useful tools for filtering spam and making sure that you receive all messages from certain domains.

After you’ve enabled Apache SpamAssassin™, follow these steps to Whitelist (Allow) and Blacklist (Deny) specific emails and/or entire domains.

Return to the Apache SpamAssassin™ page within cPanel

If you are on the main Tools page, click Spam Filters, shown in the image below

Blacklisting

Blacklisting allows you to block specific email addresses and/or all email addresses from a given domain. This is very useful when you’re working to cut out unwanted spam from your inbox.

In our example, entering example@example.com would block all emails sent from this address but it would still allow sales@example.com or support@example.com (any other email address from this domain) to be delivered to your inbox.

If you enter *@example.com, all email addresses from this domain would be discarded and you will never see them in your inbox.

Of course you’ll need to replace example@example.com or *@example.com with the actual address or domain that you want to block from emailing you.

Whitelisting

Whitelisting is the exact opposite and it’s designed to make sure that you always receive emails from the accounts and/or domains that you enter in this section, regardless of your spam filter settings.

In our example, if you add example@example.com in the Whitelist section, you will ALWAYS receive messages from this account. They will NEVER be filtered out and not delivered to you.

If you enter *@example.com, all email addresses from this domain will ALWAYS be delivered to your inbox.

Of course you’ll need to replace example@example.com or *@example.com with the actual address or domain that you want to Whitelist.

Once you’re finished, click Save and you’re all set. You can add or remove addresses as often as you want.

Message Headers

Email Message Headers are used to analyze where a given email came from. This is very useful when you need to locate a spammers email address or IP address to be able to block them from sending more spam to you.

You can locate the Email Headers using any email client. Our Documentation covers how to locate the headers using Webmail. If you are using another email client, it is best to use Google Search to locate the specific instructions.

To locate the headers using webmail, you’ll need to login to the Webmail interface open your inbox and select the message that you’d like to view details for. You can access Webmail by opening your browser and type in yourdomain.com/webmail and then sign in with your email address and password.

Near the top of the message where the subject and from information are shown, you will see blue text that says Headers. Click that and a popup will appear with all of the header information. Use it to analyze or provide it to Support to help you resolve spam related issues.
